The Sexual Abuse of Children by Teachers, Coaches, & Staff

Professor Gregory Gilbertson (Ret.), while not an attorney, has extensive experience in juvenile justice, school district operations, school district security, and school district investigations regarding teacher and staff misconduct with children. As a police officer in LaGrange, Georgia, Greg worked as a School Resource Officer for the LaGrange and Troup County school districts. In this role he investigated allegations of criminality and misconduct brought by students and their parents against faculty and staff. He also worked closely with juvenile court judges, the juvenile court, and juvenile probation officers on behalf of families with children in crisis.

Further, after leaving law enforcement Professor Gilbertson worked for two school districts as a civilian security officer in Washington State. Prior to becoming a tenured professor of criminal justice and university lecturer, he worked in elementary, middle, and high schools developing and enforcing school security policies, student and campus safety plans, and security training. This work included him investigating allegations of faculty misconduct brought by parents.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Professor Gilbertson served two years as a Guardian Ad Litem/Parenting Investigator for the Pierce County Superior Court in Tacoma, Washington. In this role he was trained to investigate allegations of child abuse or neglect brought by police, parents, relatives, or teachers in child custody cases. He also filed detailed reports of his findings to superior court judges in child custody disputes. His analysis and opinions were based on a review of the child’s school and medical records, police reports, victim and witness interviews, and other relevant evidence. He frequently made unannounced home inspections during these complex investigations that routinely required weeks, if not months to complete.
